WISLEY FLORAL PALETTE
Wisley, is one of the world’s celebrated gardens. It was founded in 1903 ,as the home of the Royal Horticultural Society. The organisation is the benchmark of excellence in plant research and garden design.
In contrast to traditional representations of flora, my project at Wisley set out to summarise the colour of the individual flowers and collectively gather an overall palette of the garden . Over one hundred and fifty blooms were photographed on a single day in June and subsequently simplified into circular palettes. They are meticulously observed representations of the flowers, displaying all the chromatic subtleties of the original flower without a trace of shadow or form. They are a celebration of natural colour presented as large harmonious colour groups. When the photographs were made each flower was tagged with an exact location which enabled routes and colours to be discovered on the ground.
The work questions the balance and the role of form and colour in our appreciation of the beauty of flora.
In addition, it provokes a conversation about the colour choices that are present in art and design and whether they owe their origin subconsciously to the natural palette of plants .
